Shays blasts Bush on threats to veto stem cell research bill
(Washington-AP, May 25, 2005 7:30 PM) _ Connecticut Congressman Chris Shays is blasting President Bush for his threat to veto expanded federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.
Shays, a fellow Republican, says today that history won't look kindly on Bush if he goes ahead with the veto.
Bush says again today that he'll veto the bill, which lifts his ban on funding for new embryonic stem cell research.
The bill passed the House 238-to-194, not enough to override a veto.
Proponents say federal funding for research on days-old embryos would help find treatments and cures for diseases. They say the embryos would have been discarded anyway.
Opponents say taxpayers should not be forced to finance science they see as an attack on unborn babies.
Shays says significant Republican support for the bill shows that conservative party leaders are out of step with the country. All three of Connecticut's Republican congressmen voted in favor.

Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong
170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community.
