Toledo Slams Dirty Politics in Peru
Lima, Feb 4 (Prensa Latina) Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo supports accusations of judicial harassment against opposition politicians made by PNP (Nationalist Party) leader Ollanta Humala, for whom the attorney general is asking a 15-year sentence.
Toledo, who arrived on the weekend from the US, where he is residing, has also been the object of legal imputations, and urged the government to stop harassing political leaders and potential candidates for the 2011 elections.
He also pronounced against the proposed 15-year sentence and exile for Humala, and added he respects him despite their huge disagreements.
In the meantime, the PNP leader sustained his denunciation that the government is resorting to judicial harassment because it wants to eliminate the opposition.
Leaders of the PNP and PP (Peru Possible), the party of Toledo, expressed their common will that Humala and Toledo meet to strengthen the opposition and counteract political persecution against opposition leaders.
The accusation against Humala last Friday led to a manifestation of leftist parties and organizations of workers and farmers in solidarity with the accused.

"It is time to say: No more. No more trampling on our Constitution. No more excusing those who violate the rule of law. These are fundamental, basic, eternal principles. They have been around, some of them, for as long as the Magna Carta. They are enduring. What they are not is temporary. And what we do not do in a time where our country is at risk is abandon them." |
| What is the greatest threat facing us now? "People will say it's terrorism. But are there any terrorists in the world who can change the American way of life or our political system? No. Can they knock down a building? Yes. Can they kill somebody? Yes. But can they change us? No. Only we can change ourselves. So what is the great threat we are facing? I would approach this differently, in almost Marshall-like terms. What are the great opportunities out there - ones that we can take advantage of?" Read more. |
