Peace Corps Volunteer Ellen Nesbitt happy she got to go to Kenya
Nesbitt lived in a rural area and taught physics, biology and math at two high schools. Nesbitt is back in Carmel and may join the Peace Corps again. But for now, she is pursuing grad school. Nesbitt's mother, Maxine Nesbitt, a math teacher at Carmel High School, thought the Peace Corps was a good opportunity for her daughter. "We didn't fear for her because she learned to get around pretty well," she said. "As violence continued to escalate, I got a little panicky for her. I'm glad she's safe back in the U.S."

Ellen Nesbitt spent 16 months in Kenya living in a home with no electricity, walking and taking public transportation for an hour to buy groceries, and teaching kids science and math as a volunteer for the Peace Corps.
She cut her stay short when violence erupted in the country after the elections, putting her life at risk.
Nesbitt, 24, a 2002 Carmel High School graduate, returned home Feb. 1, and the Peace Corps suspended operations in Kenya for three months soon after.
Although things got scary, Nesbitt was still glad she got to go.
After graduating from Purdue in 2006 with a bachelor's in environmental health, Nesbitt was unsure of what to do next. While in college she had heard about the Peace Corps through recruiters, and she decided to join.
Nesbitt left for Kenya in September 2006.

| Dodd vows to filibuster Surveillance Act Senator Chris Dodd vowed to filibuster the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act that would grant retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies that helped this administration violate the civil liberties of Americans. "It is time to say: No more. No more trampling on our Constitution. No more excusing those who violate the rule of law. These are fundamental, basic, eternal principles. They have been around, some of them, for as long as the Magna Carta. They are enduring. What they are not is temporary. And what we do not do in a time where our country is at risk is abandon them." |
| What is the greatest threat facing us now? "People will say it's terrorism. But are there any terrorists in the world who can change the American way of life or our political system? No. Can they knock down a building? Yes. Can they kill somebody? Yes. But can they change us? No. Only we can change ourselves. So what is the great threat we are facing? I would approach this differently, in almost Marshall-like terms. What are the great opportunities out there - ones that we can take advantage of?" Read more. |
