Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

Quite frankly, I wish I could do it now. I am so much wiser. . . And,
far more knowledgeable. It's interesting that we send US youth to do
what potentially is a life/work experienced job. This very act in some
ways negates the purpose of Peace Corps. Countries of service and
the people we work with realize our youth and inexperience and
consequently feel their needs aren't given true value.

Arrival Year: 1967

Work Description: taught English in Obala lycee and worked summers and parttime
second year in mental hospital - Centre Jamot - in Yaounde

Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:

I decided to improve my French, went to Paris and got a licence in
French and Russian. I then joined the UN, passed the editors exam, and
worked all over the world (Thailand, Iraq, Jordan). I am married to a
Syrian (retired former UN official) and we have an 11 year-old daughter.
I still work at home editing for the UN, but devote most of my time to my
family - and to volunteering in school and the local animal shelter. Still
dream of writing myself instead of editing other people's short stories.
The Peace Corps is mainly responsible for the path my life has taken, and
I am most grateful.

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

Mainly gratitude. Wish I had been more mature - I was oly 21 - but not
too many middle-aged people are willing to live without running water
and electricity for two years. Also (now I really sound like an old
fogey)we really were cut off from the outside world in a way current
volunteers are not; we had no e-mail or tv for two years. I have had
some difficult times - for example, when I was trapped in Baghdad while
working for the UN in August 1990. During the three long weeks when the
borders were closed after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, I told myself that if I
could survive two years alone in the African bush, there was nothing
Saddam Hussein could do to me. What I call my "Peace Corps pep talks"
helped then, and they still do.

Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:

From our group: Steve and Cathy Weed (nee Zilch); George Cass.

Country of Service: Cameroon

Training Group: Boston University - Quebec province, summer 1967

Cities you served in: Obala (two years) and Yaounde (summer 68)

Arrival Year: 1967

Departure Year: 1969

Work Description: taught English in a lycee and worked in mental hospital

Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:
I discovered that I loved languages, which I did not know before, as I was a journalism major in college. I went to Paris after the Peace Corps, taught English in a French company and went back to university to get a "licence" in French and Russian literature. I then joined the United Nations, passed a worldwide exam for editors, and worked in New York, Bangkok, Baghdad and Amman for over 20 years. I met my Syrian husband, who also worked for the UN, in Baghdad. I had my first, and only, child at age 45 here in Ashland, Oregon after my husband and I were evacuated from Baghdad in the summer of 1990. We are now retired (I still edit at home for the UN parttime) and raising our daughter here in Ashland. I have to say that during many difficult times in my life (such as when I was trapped in Baghdad in August 1990), I fortified myself by saying that I could survive anything if I made it through two years in the African bush. I am prouder of having been in the Peace Corps than of anything else I have ever done. I think that Africa gave me more than I was able to give back: I learned who I really was.

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
I now - at age 56 - have many more "life skills" than I did at age 21, when I went to Cameroon. I think I could be a better teacher now, and perhaps be of greater help to the mental patients I worked with in my summer job. However - and this is the reason most volunteers are young - I do not know now if I would have survived the severe attack of malaria I had, or if I could now be as tolerant of the mice-size bugs, the lack of electricity or running water. However, I would love to see Cameroon again.

Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:
From my Peace Corps group: Steve and Kathy Weed; George Cass; Mary Hausbeck; Will Smalzer.

Any message for returned volunteers?:
I think that the Peace Corps experience can change your life, and lead to discover the best - and worse - in you.

Training Group: Francophone TEFL -- La Pocatière, Quebec

Cities you served in: Maroua

Arrival Year: 1969

Departure Year: 1971

Work Description: TEFL teacher, Teacher trainer (Taught in French at the Cours Normal)

Other Countries you served in, Training Group Name Arrival Year, Departure Year, Work Description:
I taught TEFL at the Cours Normal, Cours Élémentaire, and École Ménagère in Maroua, Cameroun. I was the first PCV to be placed in Maroua because of my command of French. In order to get placed in Maroua, I had to be assigned to the Cours Normal and had to teach other subjects in French: camerounian history and geography, music, science, penmanship to future primary school teachers who did not have the marks to go on to CEG.

Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:
1971-72, I worked in Conakry, Guinea for the World ORT Union based in Geneva. I taught TEFL to Bauxiet Company employees.
I immigrated to Canada in 1974, got a M.Ed from Université de Sherbrooke in 1979. Worked as Educational consultant and Education professor at University of Regina (Saskatchewan)and St Boniface College (Winnipeg). Since 1988, I have been in university administration and have worked in French since I have returned from Africa.

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
I am thinking very much about my Cameroun experiences these days since I am retyping letters from Cameroun I sent to friends and families asking them to keep and give to me upon my return. I had put them aside in the hopes of doing something with them one day. I am finding out that they are an excellent journal when I type them in chronological order. Events I talk about are so fresh in my mind. It's like they happened just yesterday -- and it has been some 30 years.

Our 1969--TEFL Cameroun group is so close. We have reunited every 10 years and have gone to meeting every 5 years as we get older. The last reunion was last August when some of the group visited me at my summer home in Quebec just 15 minutes away from the college at La Pocatière where we trained. We also have our own Christmas newsletter which was started in 1970. We wonder if there are other PC groups which have remained as good friends and so close.

Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:
Mike Merenda, who trained in La Poc in 69 and I think went to the Ivory Coast. He was an excellent piano player.

Also, any other volunteer who have been posted in Maroua since 1969. As the first volunteer in Maroua, I feel I opened up Northern Cameroun for the Peace Corps -- and broke the ground for the others. I was also the first American Maroua had seen. If anyone is there today, I would love to get pictures of Maroua, especially my house which was in front of the cotton mill on the road into town from the airport. (I realize Maroua might have changed since 71 and the factory might not be there anymore.) I LOVED Maroua even though being so far away from the other PCV's was difficult at first. I'd love to hear from today's PCV in Maroua.
