Ex-S. Bend mayor in Peace Corps

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — At an age when many are considering retirement, former Mayor Roger Parent was preparing to leave for Thailand on his fourth stint in the Peace Corps.
Parent, 66, is part of a team of volunteers on a six-month assignment to help rebuild areas damaged by the tsunami that hit Southeast Asia on Dec. 26.
“I’m blessed with good health, my family is grown and my wife is supportive,” he said. “No one is totally dependent on my presence.”
Parent, whose team was leaving today, will be headed for Khao Lak, a resort center on the Andaman Sea about 250 miles south of Bangkok.
Khao Lak was hit particularly hard by the tsunami, said Parent, who was South Bend’s mayor for two terms from 1980 to 1988.
Parent said that in his application, he offered to do construction work. Instead, he was asked to be a project adviser at the tsunami volunteer center financed by the Thai government and staffed by volunteers from Thailand and countries all over the world.
Parent was brushing up on his Thai language skills. He lived with a Thai family in 1962 and 1963 during his first tour of duty with the Peace Corps.
“I know the Thai way of doing things,” he said.
In his first Peace Corps stint, Parent served in northeastern Thailand, near the Laotian border. He has also worked with the Peace Corps in Haiti and Bulgaria after leaving the mayor’s office.

It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps."
