Nepal RPCV 'Sam' Udall dies in Colorado

Read and comment on this obituary from the Boulder News for Patricia "Sam" Udall, a pioneering feminist, pilot and Peace Corps volunteer whose son represents Boulder in the U.S. Congress, who died Friday from complications following a broken hip last month. She joined the Peace Corps at age 58 and went to Nepal, where she stayed on to train pilots for the national airline.

She is the mother of Congressman Mark Udall who has been one of the leading supporters of the Peace Corps in Congress and one of the co-authors of the "Peace Corps for the 21st Century Act" passed this year in the House of Representatives. Our condolences to the family and friends of 'Sam' Udall from the Returned Volunteer community. Read the obituary at:

Congressman Udall's mother dies

'Sam' Udall was a feminist, pilot and Peace Corps volunteer

Patricia "Sam" Udall, a pioneering feminist, pilot and Peace Corps volunteer whose son represents Boulder in the U.S. Congress, died Friday from complications following a broken hip last month. She was 77.

Udall changed her name to Sam because she liked the way it sounded.

She learned to fly without telling her husband, former Arizona congressman and Denver Nugget Mo Udall, then shocked him by taking off in a plane.

She joined the Peace Corps at age 58 and went to Nepal, where she stayed on to train pilots for the national airline.

"She really carved her own path in the world," her son, Democratic Rep. Mark Udall, said. "They broke the mold after she was created."

She was born Patricia Jeannette Emery in Denver in 1926. Her father, Roe Emery, was the first concessionaire in Rocky Mountain National Park, and he owned the landmark Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Mark Udall said.

She met Mo Udall when he was playing for the Nuggets, and moved with him to Arizona until their divorce in 1966. Mo Udall had his pilot's license, and she surprised him by getting hers surreptitiously then arranging for him to see her take off in a plane, her family said.

Sam Udall's daughter, Anne Udall, said her favorite memories of her mother came from the times they were soaring through the sky together.

"That was when she was happiest," Anne Udall said. "She absolutely was in a different world."

The family moved to Boulder in 1972, and after the last of her six children left home, Udall announced she would now go by Sam, not mom or Patricia, because she'd always liked the sound of it, Mark Udall said.

Udall remained young at heart, winning the "Powderpuff Derby," a cross-country women's flying contest, in 1977, and joining the Peace Corps in 1983. She also volunteered annually at the Bolder Boulder.

As her health slipped in recent years, Sam Udall still thrilled her neighbors on Moorhead Circle with her stories and her holiday spirit, her neighbor Myia Johnson said. She said Udall would decorate all the mailboxes in the neighborhood for Easter and leave prizes for people.

"She was just a great little sprite," Johnson said.

Udall was hospitalized in August for a broken hip and developed pneumonia and heart problems, the family said. She went to the Hospice of Boulder County last weekend, where she entered a coma and never regained consciousness.

Funeral arrangements have not been finalized.

UDALL PEACE CORPS MEASURE APPROVED AS PART OF FOREIGN RELATIONS SPENDING BILL

July 15, 2003

Washington, D.C. – The House of Representatives today approved a measure sponsored by Congressman Mark Udall (D-CO) that would expand and strengthen the U.S. Peace Corps. The House included the measure in the Foreign Relations Authorization Act of 2004, a bill which authorizes $24.2 billion for State Department operations, U.S. contributions to various international organizations and foreign aid programs.

"After more than 40 years, the Peace Corps remains one of the most admired and successful initiatives ever put in place. We need an expanded and refocused Peace Corps that can take on the challenges that September 11th has presented us, and a Peace Corps that can be a strong symbol of our nation's commitment to peace," said Udall. “We need to better understand other cultures, and we need to do a better job promoting an understanding of American values abroad.”

Colorado has one of the highest levels of recruitment of Peace Corps volunteers nationwide. Udall’s district is home to over 500 returned volunteers, including his mother who served in Nepal.

The Peace Corps Charter for the 21st Century Act would amend the Peace Corps Act to increase the number of Peace Corps volunteers to 15,000; encourage the Peace Corps to increase its presence in countries whose governments are seeking to foster a greater understanding by and about their citizens (particularly those with a substantial Muslim population); train all Peace Corps volunteers in the education, prevention, and treatment of infections diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria; and create a fund to provide seed money to returned volunteers for community projects.

Since its establishment by President Kennedy in 1961, the Peace Corps has operated in 135 countries with 165,000 volunteers. The Peace Corps seeks to fulfill its mission of promoting world peace and friendship through the service of American volunteers abroad by helping people in developing countries to meet basic needs, to promote understanding of America's values and ideals abroad, and to promote an understanding of other peoples by Americans.
