Albany nonprofit still helps African students

By Gazette-Times

ALBANY, OREGON — An Albany resident whose nonprofit organization assists students at a school in Tatum, Cameroon, has returned from her fourth "successful" trip to the African nation.

"We purchased basic school supplies for 96 students, 164 mostly high school textbooks for the school library and 230 school bags, said Pavla Zakova-Laney. "Ten students benefited from donations of clothing and other donations."

Zakova-Laney was a Peace Corps volunteer at the school, teaching biology from 1996-99. In 2000 in Albany, she founded Educare-Africa, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping students at the school and elsewhere in rural Cameroon.

During Zakova-Laney's visit from May 19 through July 9, Educare-Africa also assisted more than 100 students with school fees, exam registration fees, school uniforms, rent, food and other essential needs.

"The school still needs more textbooks, a science laboratory, water, electricity, dormitory and a hall," Zakova-Laney said.

She also hopes to help about 145 secondary students with "immediate needs," and 15 to 30 high school graduates who want to attend collect.

"Approximately $7,000 by the end of September would take care of these children's essential educational needs," Zakova-Laney said.

The organization's wish list also includes a videocamera, two still cameras and volunteers to help the organization and assist on future trips to Cameroon.

Donations can be made to Educare-Africa, 950 Airport Road, No. 102, Albany, OR 97322.

To learn more about the organization, contact Zakova-Laney at pavlazl@comcast.net or 924-9290.
