Obama's Peace Corps choice mum on honor
Contacted at his office in Washington, D.C., Williams said he couldn't speak about his selection to head the American volunteer program that sends people to countries around the world for two-year stints until confirmation hearings on his nomination were held in the Senate. His press representative, however, issued a statement on his behalf, noting the Williams is "looking forward to helping make President Obama's dedication to public service a reality for more Americans ready to step up to the challenge of serving abroad." President Obama named RPCV Aaron Williams the Director of the Peace Corps on July 14, 2009.

DURHAM -- President Obama has chosen an RTI International employee as his nominee to head the Peace Corps.
Aaron Williams is vice president for International Business Development in RTI's International Development group. He's also a former Peace Corps volunteer himself, having served in the Dominican Republic from 1967-1970.
Contacted at his office in Washington, D.C., Williams said he couldn't speak about his selection to head the American volunteer program that sends people to countries around the world for two-year stints until confirmation hearings on his nomination were held in the Senate. His press representative, however, issued a statement on his behalf, noting the Williams is "looking forward to helping make President Obama's dedication to public service a reality for more Americans ready to step up to the challenge of serving abroad."
The head of the National Peace Corps Association, Kevin Quigley, welcomed the nomination of the former volunteer.
Williams, he said, "will bring an invaluable set of skills and experiences to the directorship of the Peace Corps. Aaron also understands deeply that the Peace Corps community is a valued ally in assisting the agency achieve its mission of making a more peaceful and prosperous world. Once he is confirmed by the Senate and takes up his position, we will be closer to a bolder Peace Corps, one that fulfills more of the agency's promise."
Williams joined RTI, which is based in Research Triangle Park, in 2002. He previously served as a senior official at the U.S. Agency for International Development, where he reached the rank of Career Minister in the Senior Foreign Service.
His awards include the USAID Distinguished Career Service Award in 1998 and the Presidential Award for Distinguished Service in 1988 and 1992.
