US Cuts Non-Humanitarian Aid to Mauritania After Coup
The U.S. government has suspended more than $20 million in non-humanitarian aid to Mauritania following Wednesday's military coup in the African nation. Earlier today, at least 1,000 people marched in Mauritania's capital Nouakchott in support of the coup. While that coup demonstration was allowed to proceed, riot police fired tear gas to break up a smaller protest by anti-coup demonstrators elsewhere in the capital.

The U.S. government has suspended more than $20 million in non-humanitarian aid to Mauritania following Wednesday's military coup in the African nation.
Speaking to reporters Thursday, U.S. State Department spokesman Gonzalo Gallegos said $5 million in food aid will not be affected by the decision.
The spokesman condemned the military takeover and called for the immediate return to civilian rule in Mauritania.
Earlier today, at least 1,000 people marched in Mauritania's capital Nouakchott in support of the coup. While that coup demonstration was allowed to proceed, riot police fired tear gas to break up a smaller protest by anti-coup demonstrators elsewhere in the capital.
The coup leaders, led by General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, have promised to hold new elections as soon as possible.
The generals did not give a date for the elections, but said they will be "free and transparent."
The African Union today demanded that the coup leaders release President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi, other leaders and their families who were detained on Wednesday. Mr. Abdallahi was the North African nation's first freely-elected president.
The coup took place shortly after the Mauritanian president announced his intention to replace several top army generals.
Mauritania had been embroiled in a political crisis in recent weeks. Earlier this week, most lawmakers from Mr. Abdallahi's party quit to protest some of his actions. Last month, Prime Minister Yahya Ould Ahmed Waghef and his government resigned rather than face a no-confidence vote. Mr. Waghef was later reappointed by the president.

"It is time to say: No more. No more trampling on our Constitution. No more excusing those who violate the rule of law. These are fundamental, basic, eternal principles. They have been around, some of them, for as long as the Magna Carta. They are enduring. What they are not is temporary. And what we do not do in a time where our country is at risk is abandon them." |
