West paper, yearbook continue
winning ways

Wausau Daily Herald

Students in David Wiegand's publications laboratory class at Wausau West High School continued their winning tradition at a recent journalism conference in Oshkosh.

West students picked up 47 individual awards at the Northeast Wisconsin Scholastic Press Association's Spring Journalism Conference at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

The West newspaper, the Warrior's Word, received the top award for the 18th year in a row. The school's yearbook, the Aurora, won the same recognition for the 17th consecutive time.

Of the 47 awards, 21 were first-place certificates.

Senior Jennifer Otto received a special acknowledgment for winning three or more first-place honors, the only student from a large school to earn the recognition. Her awards were for yearbook opening and closing theme spreads and a pair of firsts for two different yearbook division pages.

Two other students received three awards: Bethany Rossetti received a first-place honor in the newspaper new photo category and third-place honors in both yearbook academic story and yearbook sports spread. Nathan Gerhards took first place and third place in yearbook computer graphics and third place in yearbook cover design.

Wiegand's tenure as adviser has been marked by similar honors. The newspaper and yearbook have received more than 1,800 awards from organizations such as the Northeast Wisconsin Scholastic Press Association, the Kettle Moraine Press Association, the Wisconsin Newspaper Association and the National Scholastic Press Association.

The two publications have won more than 135 awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association alone. That association is sponsored by Columbia University in New York.

170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community.
