The University of Louisville plans to name its new library auditorium for Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao.
Chao, the wife of Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is being honored because she is a role model for U of L students, said school President James R. Ramsey.
Chao also has served as president of the United Way of America and director of the Peace Corps.
"Elaine Chao is a national leader and a true friend of the university," Ramsey said. "We are proud she is part of the U of L family, and we're pleased to be able to recognize her in this way."
Chao also "is very positive in her comments about the University of Louisville when she speaks publicly, and her husband is one of the most senior senators in the U.S. Senate," according to a written recommendation to the U of L trustees from Ramsey.
The recommendation also notes that Chao "frequently attends sporting, cultural and social events that the university sponsors."
Chao has an honorary U of L degree.
A trustees' committee approved the naming this week, and it will go to the full board in April.
Chao was traveling yesterday and did not return a call seeking comment. McConnell's office was closed.
McConnell had earmarked $14.2 million in federal money for construction of an addition to the Ekstrom Library scheduled to open next fall.
It will include the auditorium, a 24-hour study area, and an automated storage and retrieval system expected to house up to 1.2 million volumes, an expanded periodicals reading room, and office, meeting and display space.
