Dispel the myth: Tech's Career Center working hard to get you work
By: Shaun LeVeque - News Editor
Date Posted: March 30, 2005
Many times, it seems that students will make the claim that their university isn't doing enough for them in some respect or another. One of the hottest areas of debate is over the effort put in by the school to maintain or increase student job placement after graduation as well as the internship and co-op opportunities made available during undergraduate studies. Students often want to know if the university is doing enough.
[Excerpt]
While a $2,500 donation will allow a company to become a Career Center Partner and gain the benefits it provides, as stated by both Adler and the Career Center Web site, Turnquist says that it is wrong to think that a donation of that amount is required to participate in Tech's career fairs.
When asked if that assertion was true, Turnquist simply replied, "No, it is not."
Turnquist said that there are costs to participate for most companies, but it is far less than $2,500, with some local and non-profit firms participating at reduced rates or even free of charge if they qualify. Turnquist said that the Peace Corps participates at no cost.
"It costs $400 per table [to participate in a career fair]," said Turnquist. "This covers two attendants, continental breakfast and lunch." He said that additional people could be present for each company at a cost of $25 per person.
Total revenue for the fall 2004 Career Day was $66,025.00. Total expenditures in preparation and execution of the event amounted to $33,787.95. The $32,237.05 left over was used to subsidize the budget deficit, according to Turnquist. He said that the spring 2004 career fair cost about $10,000 in comparison.
