YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio -- Antioch College has picked as its new president a Ford Foundation official with a background in environmental and human-rights issues.
Steven Lawry, director of the office of management services at the New York City-based foundation, was selected Wednesday following a national search.
James Craiglow, Antioch's chancellor, said Lawry embraces many of the values that historically have been at the core of Antioch, has good management skills, and an ability to confront and solve difficult issues.
"In addition, he brings a network and an understanding of the philanthropic world," Craiglow said.
The college in this southwest Ohio village about 15 miles east of Dayton has had an interim president since President Joan Straumanis stepped down July 1.
Lawry has held the same position with the foundation since 2001. From 1997 to 2001, he served as the foundation's representative for the Middle East and North Africa. Lawry also has worked for the United Nations and served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Botswana.
Antioch College, which traces its history to 1854, is part of the Antioch University system that includes Antioch McGregor, also in Yellow Springs; a graduate school in New Hampshire; a campus in Seattle; and Antioch Southern California, which has campuses in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.
While Antioch College offers liberal arts and cooperative education to traditional-age undergraduates, the other campuses focus mostly on training adults already in the work force.
