Local doctor serving as instructor for medical student
Special to the Daily News
Dr. Edwin R. Bonilla, of the Family Health Clinic is currently serving as a clinical instructor for Tulane Medical School in New Orleans. Lisa Wu, a third year medical student at Tulane will be completing her Family Medicine rotation/clerkship in April with Dr. Bonilla.
Lisa grew up in Kirkland, Wash., a small city north of Seattle. After graduating from college and before entering medical school, Lisa went into the Peace Corps. She spent her time in the Peace Corps on the Solomon Islands and in Western Samoa as a math and science teacher to grades 7 and 9-13 in classes as large as 72 students. Wu said she was inspired to become a doctor when she watched the movie "The City of Joy" in the 8th grade. "The movie sparked two interests in me: medicine and travel," said Wu. Lisa's career interests are in Family Practice and rural medicine.
As a student doctor, Lisa will learn basic strategies for clinical decision making, and become familiar with the family physician's place in the overall health care system. She will also closely observe the doctor-patient relationship. "During her clerkship, Lisa will have the opportunity to experience first hand the medical practices in a family physician clinic, and establish more realistic perceptions and expectations about the role of the rural family physician," expressed Dr. Bonilla.
Additionally, Lisa will have the opportunity to visit other local physician's offices, and spend time in Beauregard Memorial Hospital's Emergency Room and Radiology Department. "It is great to have medical students in the community and to promote academic medicine," commented Bonilla. "It is also a great way to begin the process of recruiting excellent physicians."
During her stay, Lisa will receive room and board as a courtesy of Beauregard Memorial Hospital.
