Volunteers honor Rosalind Kan for international friendship
ROSALIND KAN has never been in the Peace Corps, but she's done a great deal to help Fairbanksans understand people from other parts of the world.
That's one reason why the Northern Alaska Peace Corps Friends plan to honor her Wednesday with the "Spirit of Peace Corps" award.
Kan came to the United States from Taiwan in 1964, to pursue graduate studies. She and her husband, Joe, a retired university scientist, raised three children, Christina, Deborah and Steven.
Christina is a pediatrician, Deborah is an urban planner and Steven is pursuing a career in finance.
During her years in Fairbanks, Kan was involved in efforts to improve the lives of local citizens. Among her chief accomplishments is serving as the whirlwind chiefly responsible for the continuation of the annual International Friendship Day celebration in October.
Kan, who works as an engineer at the Department of Transportation, has organized the Chinese language school for six years and taught lessons.
