But recent efforts by the Peace Corps community to advocate for increased Peace Corps funding had this result: Forty-one members of the House of Representatives signed onto a “Dear Colleague” letter expressing support for full funding of the President’s Peace Corps budget request. That is more than double the amount of signatures collected on similar House letters in 2005.

Information on letter-to-the-editor you can use as a guide for thanking your Congressman/woman
* In the editorial section of your local newspaper (or on the paper's website), find instructions for submitting a letter-to-the-editor.
* Your letters do not have to be long. Two or three well-written sentences are sufficient.
* If your letter does not get printed, it can still be effective! Make a copy and send a quick thank you note to your representative, indicating the attempt you made to publicly thank them!
* Please Note: If you are represented by one of the five RPCV House members (Farr, Honda, Petri, Shays, Walsh) your letter should credit these members for their leadership in initiating the Peace Corps "Dear Colleague" letter.
* Contact us at advocacy@rpcv.org if you have any questions or to update us on your progress. Thanks!

Congressman/woman _____ Shows Support for the Peace Corps
To The Editor:
I want to thank Congressman/woman ________ for joining several dozen colleagues in a bi-partisan expression of support for expansion of the Peace Corps.
At a period in our history when cooperative engagement with other nations of the world has added meaning, the mission of the Peace Corps to build bridges of friendship is as relevant as ever in the agency’s illustrious, 44-year history.
Congressman/woman _____ recently signed a letter circulated among House members supporting President Bush's proposal to increase Peace Corps funding to $345 Million for Fiscal Year 2006.
As a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (or former Peace Corps Staff), I believe a program which promotes understanding between citizens is a wise investment for our nation. I applaud Congressman/woman _____'s leadership and hope s/he will continue to work for eventual full funding of the Peace Corps.

 | Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong 170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community. |
