Pope John Paul II cradled the face of the University of Dayton nun as they spoke like father to precious child.
Sister Angela Ann Zukowski said she will never forget her first meeting with the pope, a man with a twinkle in his eyes, a poet, athlete and theologian.
"When you were in his presence, you felt like he truly was your spiritual father, that he cared for you. That's the inner man," said Zukowski, director of UD's Institute for Pastoral Initiatives. "I think he was a mystic, a man of profound prayer and in communication with God."
[Excerpt]
Tony Hall, the former U.S. congressman from Dayton, found the pope to be courageous and capable of forgiving the man who shot him in 1981.
Hall had a private audience with John Paul inside the Vatican a year and a half ago after settling into his position as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations' food and agriculture organizations, based in Rome.
"It was a great thrill to meet this spiritual leader of the Catholic Church and a person I've admired for a long time," Hall said. "He was very interested in my work with the poor."
Hall, a non-denominational Protestant whose wife, Janet, is Catholic — shook the pope's hand and spoke with him briefly. Despite his age and failing health, Hall found him to be alert and sharp.
"He didn't change his convictions because times were changing. He stuck by it. I admire him for that," Hall said. "He's a strong believer and he shows it in his actions. He doesn't necessarily give a sermon; he shows a sermon by his life."
