GEORGETOWN, Guyana - The U.S. Peace Corps has removed three volunteers from a southwestern border town near Brazil where two American missionaries were killed last week, a U.S. Embassy official said Tuesday.
The volunteers were sent to Guyana's capital of Georgetown for counseling and consultations, said Anthony Interlando, the embassy's deputy chief of mission. It was unclear whether the volunteers would be sent back.
"This is a normal practice, and it is being done out of abundant caution," Interlando said. Peace Corp officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
Richard Hicks, 42, and his wife Charlene, 58, were found dead Thursday at the farm they rented in a cattle-raising and peanut-growing region about 230 miles (370 kilometers) southwest of Georgetown.
Police suspect robbery was the motive and are searching for two suspects - a local resident and a Brazilian who worked as a ranch hand with the Hicks. Both are believed to have fled across the former British colony's river border with Brazil.
