[Excerpt]
A holy man in humble surroundings
In 1984, I was serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in the remote South Pacific country of Solomon Islands when Pope John Paul II came for a visit.
He spoke in a park, beginning with the pidgin English of the area. He accepted, with thankfulness, the humble gifts of the people including a (very clean) pig. There seemed to be no security, and after the ceremony, people could go right up to the pope.
He walked slowly among the people led by the joyful sound of panpipe players in loincloths. He grasped hands, put his hand on the heads of children, looked into the eyes of individuals and smiled with a sincere pleasure.
I was not a Catholic and thus had no particular interest in the pope. But, after this experience, I could not deny Pope John Paul II possessed the holiness of a man filled with a deep love and concern for humanity.”
Bree Lafreniere, 46, Tacoma
