NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania - A police official says officers have arrested a third suspected al-Qaida member for the June murder of American teacher.
Police commissioner Mohamed Ould Ghassem says 26-year-old Didi Ould Bezeid was arrested Friday in Nouakchott, the capital.
Ghassem said Bezeid was the third member of a suspected al-Qaida-linked terror cell that claimed responsibility for the murder of 39-year-old Christopher Ervin Leggett. The North Africa branch of al-Qaida claimed to have killed Leggett because he was allegedly trying to convert Muslims to Christianity.
On July 17, police arrested two other suspects in the killing. One was found wearing an explosive belt.
Extremist violence in Mauritania, a moderate Muslim nation, has increased in recent years.
