This 'Hurlyburly' Is For Gypsy Women
New York Post
March 15, 2005
March 15, 2005 - YOU know about the reprise of the play "Hurlyburly," and that it's a hot ticket, and that Ethan Hawke's one of its stars. What you don't know is his mom is taking over a chunk of tomorrow night's audience for her charity.
Leslie Hawke lives in Romania. We spoke as she was leaving for New York. She told me about her work:
"It's The Alex Fund: a nonprofit organization that helps gypsy women in such poverty that they haven't even had primary school. Children live on the streets and beg in order to eat. You can't just arrest their parents because they, too, need food and a roof over their heads. Gypsies suffer great discrimination. Can't even get identity papers. Upper white middle-class people can't grapple with what their lives are like."
And how did her involvement in this begin?
"A lifetime ago I was in the Peace Corps in Romania. Then I raised a son. And married again. I have two stepchildren, and now I live in Bucharest. I'm back to New York a few times a year but I stay with a friend, not Ethan. It works better that way. Ethan's been over twice and helped me do a benefit in Bucharest."
And at this point of her son's life - the career's going up, the marriage to Uma Thurman went down - how would she say he is? "He seems to be quite happy."
Tomorrow's benefit tickets are $150. A couple of seats are still available. There will be a Q&A afterwards with the actors, playwright and director. When we spoke she had a couple of tickets left.

Peace Corps Calendar: Tempest in a Teapot? Bulgarian writer Ognyan Georgiev has written a story which has made the front page of the newspaper "Telegraf" criticizing the photo selection for his country in the 2005 "Peace Corps Calendar" published by RPCVs of Madison, Wisconsin. RPCV Betsy Sergeant Snow, who submitted the photograph for the calendar, has published her reply. Read the stories and leave your comments.
WWII participants became RPCVs Read about two RPCVs who participated in World War II in very different ways long before there was a Peace Corps. Retired Rear Adm. Francis J. Thomas (RPCV Fiji), a decorated hero of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005 at 100. Mary Smeltzer (RPCV Botswana), 89, followed her Japanese students into WWII internment camps. We honor both RPCVs for their service.
Bush's FY06 Budget for the Peace Corps The White House is proposing $345 Million for the Peace Corps for FY06 - a $27.7 Million (8.7%) increase that would allow at least two new posts and maintain the existing number of volunteers at approximately 7,700. Bush's 2002 proposal to double the Peace Corps to 14,000 volunteers appears to have been forgotten. The proposed budget still needs to be approved by Congress.
