Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:
Ford Foundation Fellow for International Development (for RCPVs) at
UCLA for M.A. in Economics. Spent decade working in Congress, for Joint
Economic Committee, Legislative Director for Rep. George E. Brown, Jr. of
California--the only C.O. ever elected to Congress and the first Member
of the House to oppose the Vietnam War--and as Legislative Analyst for
Rep. Ronald V. Dellums of California. Moved to West Virginia and ran
old-time country store. Returned to D.C. as Executive Director of ACT'79,
the Appropriate Community Technology Fair and Conference, then
assisted other communities around the country to develop their own
resource-based programs through ACTION. When Reagan eliminated
those funds--naturally, what else--I spent three months backpacking
through Asia. Then, in 1981, I became the Director of Research for the
National Football League Players Association and I have now been with
the NFLPA going on 21 years. When I retire in 2005, my wife and I will
move to Maui. We have a 17-year old daughter who plans to become a
film-maker.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
(1) It didn't take me long to realize that I was learning more from my
Peace Corps service than I ever could contribute.
(2) I had many dreams about things I seemed to have left unresolved in
Liberia. Until after the day I rode into Katmandu in a cab from the airport
and was struck by a sudden epiphany: That we are the anomoly in the
world, and that there were so many parallels between Nepal and Liberia
and that no matter what Volunteers can and have done, we are still only
chipping away at the abject needs out

Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:
Since the Peace Corps, I have been working in public health settings. I
spent a lot of time in late 1980'2 and 1990's working in refugee relief and
development projects with various NGO's in Africa and Thailand. I last
worked overseas on Thai/Burma border in 1996 for a year.
Since that time, I have focused on tuberculosis as a nurse consultant, at
the Francis J. Curry National TB Center in San Francisco, and for the past six
months ( since November 2001) for the state of Oregon, now living in
Portland.
Married, no children, and still focused on our "small" world.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
It was the best of times, the worst of times, and gave me perspective that
can not easily abide the self-preoccupation that seems to come easily to so
many of my colleagues. Peace Corps made us citizens of the world for life.
Thank God!

Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:
I returned to West Virginia University for a couple years for a degree in family resources. Then I married a sailor, moved around the country--San Diego, Long Beach, West Virginia, Virginia, and now Baltimore, MD for the past 18 years. I have 3 children, ages from 16 to 25. Am self-employeed, doing alterations and cleaning a dental office. I home schooled my children for 12 years until the combination of schooling and work became too much for me. I've continued to work in photography, mostly portraits, and now do quilting and sailing.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
It was an opportunity I would never have missed. I kept in contact with several of my students and the woman who owned the well where I got my water for many years after I returned. I only regret that I didn't go into Wozi for further language training and that I lost track of many of the volunteers I liked.

Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Ruth Elizabeth Beecher can be contacted at ltrebaaoldcom
Country of Service: Liberia
Training Group: We were all "upcountry" in Totata, Liberia for 6 weeks "cross culture" training
Cities you served in: Based in Monrovia but did "rounds" and conferences with all the other hospitals and clinics throughout Liberia over two years
Arrival Year: October 1985 - Our group entered Liberia later than usual because Samuel Kayon Doe (then President) did not want us in the country when the "first democratic Presidential elections" were going on.
Departure Year: July 1987
Work Description:
I was counterpart to the Director of Nurses at JFK Medical Center and Administrator of Tnima-Tubman National Institute of Medical Arts at these co-joining facilities. I taught student nurses and did admin and supervisory duties.
Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:
Since I took early retirement from my NY health Ed teaching position, I was in good health to go into Peace Corps at age 60. I was not happy being a "young" retiree in Florida so I tried going back into Peace Corps. After failing the Medical 3 times I could not go into Peace Corps then.
The cough that I came home with was thought to possibly be tuberculosis. However, the Miami Veterans' Hospital diagnosed it as COPD - Ceonic Obstructive Pulmonar Disease - from all the red dust I breathed into my lungs living on a red dirt toad.
I did volunteer work, became color guard with AM Legion 222 (first female), MCL 755, AAUW (American University Women) and I serve on the US Selective Service Board yearly.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
Simply depressing that Liberia, our work and the Liberian people that we grew to love have gone through such horrendous times.
I am a sentimental old gal and while in Liberia I wrote our "alma mater" - it has been used over and over for 25th Peace Corps ceremony etc but I can not get it acknowledged and if I die soon I would like it to be known. It is and was my tribute to US Peace Corps and Liberia in general.
I do want to thank you for helping me - I do want to be listed so that perhaps I can find my friends and they can find me.
Sincerely,
Ruth E. Beecher
