Even in Thailand, PCVs are thought to be spies. We're often accused of pushing the US's agenda abroad. How can we now refute such claims? The purpose of the Peace Corps is to provide help to developing countries and to foster better relationships between cultures. The purpose of the military is safety and security and... war. The new idea goes against Sargent Shriver's original vision.

Hello out there!
[Excerpt]
By the way, have you heard in the news how the U.S. Government is going to allow members of the military to join the Peace Corps as a part of their duty? What I have to say is my opinion and may or may not be the opinion of anyone else. But, I think that's a dumb idea. Check out the article here:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/08/01/AR2005080101310.html?referrer=emailarticle
The recent program, which was passed without the Peace Corps Director's knowledge, goes against the very idea of the Peace Corps, which is supposed to be kept separate from US foreign policy. It has always been an independent arm. Besides, it's a risk to our work. The Peace Corps already gets more applications every year than it can possibly accept. Apparently the US military is worried about low recruitment numbers. Does the number 1,800 mean anything to them? My two cents.
Peace and love,

 | Military Option sparks concerns The U.S. military, struggling to fill its voluntary ranks, is allowing recruits to meet part of their military obligations by serving in the Peace Corps. Read why there is rising opposition to the program among RPCVs. Director Vasquez says the agency has a long history of accepting qualified applicants who are in inactive military status. John Coyne says "Not only no, but hell no!" Latest: RPCV Chris Matthews to discuss the issue on Hardball tonight. |
 | Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong 170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community. |
