“The good news is that it appears that the thousands of sponsored children we serve in rural communities in Mississippi, Arkansas, South Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky are safe, although at least two facilities where we conduct after-school programs have suffered some water damage,” said Mark Shriver, Save the Children vice president and managing director of U.S. Programs, in a written statement.

Westport-based Save the Children said today it will assist rural communities it serves in the South in rebuilding following Hurricane Katrina.
Also, sponsored children in the region were safe, and Save the Children-sponsored schools took on minor damage from the storm, the charity said.
Save the Children provides literacy and physical fitness programs in a number of rural, poor communities throughout the United States.
Katrina slammed the Gulf Coast Monday with winds over 145 miles per hour destroying homes and businesses in its path and causing significant flooding, including in New Orleans.
“While we are tremendously grateful that the children we serve and our program partners are safe, our thoughts and prayers today go out to the hundreds of thousands of families and children affected by this devastating storm.”

| Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong 170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community. |
