Former Michigan State University President Peter McPherson will be the new head of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, the group announced Thursday.
McPherson will become president of the group Jan. 1. He will replace Peter Magrath, who has led the Washington, D.C.-based organization since 1992.
William Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland and chair of the committee that searched for a new president, said McPherson has the experience needed for the job.
McPherson, who stepped down from Michigan State last year, has worked to rebuild Iraq's war-ravaged financial system and has been active in efforts to end hunger in Africa and expand study-abroad programs.
Before his tenure at Michigan State, McPherson was the vice president of Bank of America from 1989-93 and served as the deputy secretary of the U.S. Treasury Department from 1987-89.
"In all his positions, Peter has demonstrated the capacity to build coalitions to get important things done," Kirwan said in a statement. "He is definitely an 'out-of-the-box' thinker, a quality we clearly need in higher education leadership today."
The 214-member non-profit university group is the country's oldest higher education association.
"I believe the role of public higher education is to provide access and opportunity for an excellent education," McPherson said in a statement.
