"U.S. college graduates are facing one of the best job markets we've ever seen. Our country is transitioning to a knowledge-based economy, which places a premium on technology and education. The majority of the 5.3 million new jobs created in the last two and a half years in our country require a higher level of education and skill sets," Chao said. "U.S. college graduates are facing one of the best job markets we've ever seen. Our country is transitioning to a knowledge-based economy, which places a premium on technology and education. The majority of the 5.3 million new jobs created in the last two and a half years in our country require a higher level of education and skill sets," Chao said. "So by graduating today, you have taken the first step to a bright future. The more you invest in yourselves through education and training, the more the new knowledge economy will reward you."

Secretary Chao is the nation's 24th Secretary of Labor, and the first Asian Pacific American woman appointed to a President's cabinet in U.S. history.

"Secretary Chao has earned a reputation for accepting tough assignments and applying innovative strategies to address longstanding challenges," said Mary Brown Bullock, president of Agnes Scott College. "With a solid record of leadership, she has brought a distinctive skill set to her position, meeting many challenges with confidence and a clear vision."

For her accomplishments and commitment to promoting lives of service, the college awarded Chao an honorary doctor of laws. Emigrating to the United States when she was eight years old, Chao spoke no English. Her experience transitioning to a new country inspired her to dedicate most of her professional life to ensuring that people have the opportunity to pursue lives of dignity and financial independence.

Chao has served as president and chief executive officer of United Way of America, director of the Peace Corps, deputy secretary at the U.S. Department of Transportation, and chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission. Her private sector experience includes serving as vice president of syndications at BankAmerica Capital Markets Group and as a banker with Citicorp. Prior to her nomination as Secretary of Labor, she was a distinguished fellow at The Heritage Foundation. Chao received her master's degree in business administration from the Harvard Business School and her bachelor's degree in economics from Mount Holyoke College. She also studied at M.I.T., Dartmouth College, and Columbia University.

Professor Emerita of English Margaret W. Pepperdene also was honored with the doctor of humane letters in recognition of her 50 years of outstanding teaching in Atlanta, 30 years at Agnes Scott followed by 20 years of teaching honors English at the Paideia School.

The college's board of trustees recognizes distinguished contributions to scholarship, public service or profession through the conferring of honorary degrees.

The 117th commencement will be Mary Bullock's last as president of Agnes Scott. She will complete 11 years as president of Agnes Scott College when she steps down Aug. 1 to pursue other interests. During its recent spring meeting, the board of trustees voted to name the college's science center for Bullock in tribute to her leadership.

Completed in 2003, the $36.5-million building houses the departments of biology, chemistry, psychology, physics and the Science Center for Women.

"The board acted in tribute to President Bullock's leadership - integrating the sciences and liberal arts at Agnes Scott," said Harriett King, board chair. "This building stands as testimony to her vision for educating women at this liberal arts and sciences college."

During her tenure the college nearly doubled its enrollment, launched and concluded its $70 million Bold Aspirations campaign, and became a more diverse academic community. To acknowledge Bullock's service to the college, the board of trustees also voted to name Bullock president emerita of the college.
