Liberia RPCV Sara Chiodo Woolford dies in Florida
After retiring, at age 70, she joined the Peace Corp and served as a teacher for the KRTTI teacher's college in Liberia, Africa.
Liberia RPCV Sara Chiodo Woolford dies in Florida
Sara Chiodo Woolford, 97, died in the loving presence of her family on July 21, 2005 in The Villages (Lady Lake), Florida. Mrs. Woolford lived in the Richmond area, including Manakin-Sabot, for 48 years before moving in 2004 to The Villages. Born in Soveria Manelli, Italy in 1909, she grew up in Des Moines, Iowa. A graduate of Simmons College, Drake University and Iowa University, Mrs. Woolford was a lifelong educator, beginning her teaching career in a one-room school house in Boone, Iowa.
During the 1960's and 1970's, she taught high school in Chesterfield County. After retiring, at age 70, she joined the Peace Corp and served as a teacher for the KRTTI teacher's college in Liberia, Africa.
A former parishioner of St. Bridget's Catholic Church, she was an active member of the Richmond Gem and Mineral Society, the Italian-American Cultural Society (IACA) and a Docent at the Science Museum of Virginia.
Survivors include her daughters Pat Gasque, The Villages, Fla., Mary Shutts, N. Myrtle Beach, S.C., Sara Moses, Silver Spring, Md., Christina Woolford, Richmond; sons Anthony, The Villages, Fla., Roger, Summerfield, Fla., Don, Richmond, Steve, Los Angeles, Ca.; 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael, and husband, Donald. Sara is most remembered for her sense of adventure, her generosity and her selflessness.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 19 at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 909 Rennie Avenue, Richmond, Virginia 23227, reception to follow - a celebration of life - in the St. Paul's parish commons. For additional information contact Christina Woolford at (804) 342-7395.
