[Excerpt]
Looking back, the last time a guy had been so tender to her was when Jake, her boyfriend of three years, told her he was enlisting in the Peace Corps to serve Third World countries that had gone ignored for far too long. He needed to become a whole man. For her.
During a long and tearful goodbye at the airport, he'd promised to write every single day. He swore to Gillian he'd come back a better man. Then, and only then, could they really start planning a future together.
Two weeks later, Gillian was stunned to see Jake helping himself to a big-busted bleached blonde at a packed bar in South Beach. As Gillian bolted out of the watering hole, she expected Jake to chase after her... to give her some explanation of why he was still in sunny South Florida and not feeding orphans in Uganda. She even walked extra slow so he'd have the chance to catch up to her. But he never appeared. Fifty pounds later, Gillian realized she'd finally got past her grief or buried her pain in food.
That's when her life began to unravel. It was right around the time she had landed the job at the PR firm. Having just been dumped by the man of her dreams, her confidence was shot. In retrospect, Gillian was positive that's why she stayed in the position for five long years.
After Jake had screwed her over, she felt worthless. If he didn't want her, why would anyone else? Gillian knew in the back of her mind that she could have been Lucinda -- attractive, successful and wealthy. There was a time when she had no problem slipping into a size 4 to strut her stuff and hobnob with the best of the best.
If she could only get back to that happy place.

| Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong 170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community. |
