Emil Malinovsky, 91, a resident of Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville, died of cancer at Renaissance Gardens, its health care center, on March 23 following a brief illness.
Born in Chicago in 1913, and raised on a farm near Cleveland, Ohio, Mr. Malinovsky was the oldest of three children of Simon and Julia Malinovsky, who were immigrants from Slovakia.
A World War II Army veteran, he served with the 34th "Red Bull" Division in campaigns in North Africa, Sicily and Italy, where he was briefly captured by the Italians. He earned the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Purple Heart and the Prisoner of War medals.
He was a 1939 graduate of Ohio State University in Columbus, and married the former Laura Rebecca Prescott in 1940. He was a professor of agricultural economics at the university and retired as professor emeritus in 1972.
He resided with his family in Columbus, from 1950 to 1972 and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Westerville, Ohio. Following retirement, he and his wife served in the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone. His assignment included the completion of a World Bank assessment of agriculture in that country.
Following residency in California and Texas, the couple moved to Heritage Harbour in 1990 and then to Charlestown in Catonsville in 1995.
In addition to his wife of 64 years, he is survived by four sons, William Malinovsky of Edgewater, David Malinovsky of Edison, N.J., Peter Malinovsky of Woodstock in Howard County and James Malinovsky of El Dorado Hills, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Charlestown United Protestant Church, Maiden Choice Lane, Catonsville. The family will receive friends at 10:30 a.m. Mr. Malinovsky's ashes will be interred in the family plot in Westerville at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 43025, 8219 Town Center Drive, Baltimore MD 21236.

| Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong 170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community. |
