Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:
Robin and I travelled for six months after COS and visited 8 countries--we called it our Capetown to Kenya trip. Moved to Albuqerque, NM in Feb '97 and have been here since. Robin is a Elementary School Teacher and I am a Structural Engineer. We have two children--a girl and a boy. We are raising them in a very multicultural way: family, food, trips, and education. We hope that they are "Peace Corpers" in the making.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
We still think of our time there often: we have fond memories of the time there, made great friends and still have them, and we use the language when we don't want the children to know what we are saying. Unfortunately, our Chichewa/English dictionary surfaced in our little library and now the eldest, our girl, may be picking up on some of what we are saying.
Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:
We are staying in touch with quite a few friends. We'd love to hear from more.
Any message for returned volunteers?:
Remember the movie, "Moscow on the Hudson" with Robin Williams? When he goes to a grocery store to buy coffee and is overwhelmed by the sheer amount of choices? I think that this scene was discussed during our COS and what to look forward to upon coming home. I didn't believe it but it was exactly the feeling when I arrived in country at Blantyre Airport and at Grace Bandawe Center. I did not believe that it was going to happen again, but it did coming home.

The Directory of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers and Former Staff 1961 - 2000 published by the National Peace Corps Association is the closest to what you are looking for. It lists RPCVs for each country but there is no bio. The closest thing to a bio is what you see here. You can order the Directory through the NPCA at 202-293-7728 for $75. Also check with the Friends of Malawi and see if they can help you. If you are looking for a specific person leave a message on this web site at the Looking for a Returned Volunteer bulletin board.

A Friend of Malawi
This site is now my private website about my experience as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Malawi in the middle 1960s and the third leg of my Peace Corps commitment, the education of folks around you about your experience and to educate others about your country of service and the Peace Corps experience, with lots of information about Malawi, especially the photograph collection of various RPCVs, including mine, Jack Allison's fantastic public health songs, Malawi Children's Village, the Rotary Project for MCV plus information and the various Peace Corps, Malawi and General Africa and World links pages, but minus the official FOM stuff.
A Friend of Malawi
elcome to the former Friends of Malawi website. To make it clear, there is a new FOM web page found by clicking HERE. One of my joys and appreciations is the willing use of some of my very favorite photographs on the new Official FOM site. Please visit the new site but return to this one, too, as I will be adding new links and information, from time to time. Should RPCVs want their own photo page on this site, great. Please send my your best and favorite e-pictures and provide a description of each image. I have tons of web-space and would welcome collecting a fabulous photo gallery of various RPCVs or a set of links to your pages. I know the FOM site would like that too, so, two is better than one or none.
To paraphrase a famous song, "Times, they have changed".
As an aside but an important one to me, it has been my total pleasure to have provided this site to and for FOM, since May of 1999, at no cost to FOM, with the great support form NDSI (see below for more information). I totally appreciate the great support, complements, requests to use my pictures from the Galleries, etc., from many FOM members and others, over the years. When asked, I always say yes, with my complement of being asked, in the first place. The FOM Website has been my labor of love, that's for sure.
Thanks, too, for all the great Guestbook Postings too, with some 420 plus postings to date. The FOM and AFOM site has had over the 57,500 visitors since my taking over the site from the originator, Don Lotter, Wil and Jane's son, in July of 1999. What a great number! I am proud of it.
Your former FOM WebGuy returned in August of 2004 from the 25th anniversary of the National Peace Corps Association Conference in Chicago. The co-hosts, the Chicago Area Peace Corps Association, did a fantastic job in organizing a very successful conference. Thanks to all for their great job! A fun time was sitting/standing about 20 feet from Peter Yarrow, of PP&M, earlier today, singing "Where have all the flowers gone" and "We shall over come". Way cool!
Please enjoy your visit to my website and return often.
This site is designed to be viewed with your PC settings of 1024 x 768 pixels and ‘Small Font’. Should you be using lager settings, some labels might appear to 'word wrap'. Everything still works, it is just a little bit bigger. If any of the above links are defunct, or if you know a Web link that should be on my AFOM page please send the URL and description to: John Strain AFOM Web Guy. I look forward to serving the site for some time to come. Please let me know your thoughts, comments and suggestions. Thank you, in advance.
Guestbook / Message Posters: Please note when you click the Private Message box, it will only be seen by me, the AFOM Web Guy, and not the casual visitor or old friend you are trying to hook-up with. If you need to contact me, John Strain, which is totally okay, please do so via this direct email link by clicking HERE. Private postings confuse many other visitors, so, I wanted to share this information to visitors. Thanks in advance.
Please sign my Guestbook Please view my Guestbook, you may have a message!
If you are looking for old friends, general information, etc., please do not click the Private Message box when posting a message to the Guestbook, just post it.
I hope this helps connect old friends, the main purpose of this feature. Way Cool!
FOM had the over 41,000 visits, from 7/4/1999 until the problem on 5/1/2003. The site and visit counter were restarted 6/7/2003 and last updated 8/28/2005. This site was created and managed with Microsoft FrontPage 2003. This Site has been hosted at no cost to FOM or AFOM by Nnovative Data Systems, Inc., Newport News, Virginia, since 7/4/1999. NDSI perform a number of risk management and home health care technology related software applications and consulting services. Their site can be viewed at clicking on their green name, above. Should you have a need, want to learn more or want a demonstration, please email the old FOM WebGuy HERE. One hand washes the other.

Peace Corps Online The Independent News Forum serving Returned Peace Corps Volunteers
Returned Volunteers respond to Hurricane Katrina
First and foremost, Give. Carol Bellamy says "In situations such as this one, money is needed the most" and added that Hurricane Katrina's impact on New Orleans is comparable to last year's tsunami. Thailand RPCV Thomas Tighe's Direct Relief International has committed an initial $250,000 in cash to assist hurricane victims. Mayor Tom Murphy (RPCV Paraguay) says Pittsburgh is ready to embrace refugees from devastated areas. Mark Shriver of Save the Children says it will assist rural communities it serves in rebuilding. Brazil RPCV Robert Backus is among the first Vermont doctors to volunteer to travel to Louisiana to treat victims. Ohio Governor Bob Taft (RPCV Tanzania) says students displaced by "Katrina" can enroll in Ohio Colleges and Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle (RPCV Tunisia) is sending soldiers to help residents of Louisiana. Do you know what it means to lose New Orleans? Contact your local Red Cross to Volunteer.
Military Option sparks concerns
The U.S. military, struggling to fill its voluntary ranks, is allowing recruits to meet part of their reserve military obligations after active duty by serving in the Peace Corps. Read why there is opposition to the program among RPCVs. Director Vasquez says the agency has a long history of accepting qualified applicants who are in inactive military status. John Coyne says "Not only no, but hell no!" and RPCV Chris Matthews leads the debate on "Hardball." Latest: Avi Spiegel says Peace Corps is not the place for soldiers while Coleman McCarthy says to Welcome Soldiers to the Peace Corps. RPCVs: Read our poll results.
Why blurring the lines puts PCVs in danger
When the National Call to Service legislation was amended to include Peace Corps in December of 2002, this country had not yet invaded Iraq and was not in prolonged military engagement in the Middle East, as it is now. Read the story of how one volunteer spent three years in captivity from 1976 to 1980 as the hostage of a insurrection group in Colombia in Joanne Marie Roll's op-ed on why this legislation may put soldier/PCVs in the same kind of danger.
The Peace Corps Library
Peace Corps Online is proud to announce that the Peace Corps Library is now available online. With over 30,000 index entries in 500 categories, this is the largest collection of Peace Corps related stories in the world. From Acting to Zucchini, you can find hundreds of stories about what RPCVs with your same interests or from your Country of Service are doing today. If you have a web site, support the "Peace Corps Library" and link to it today.
Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong
170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community.
